Titicaca`s flowers

It seems the rainy season is coming back soon here in South America`s largest fresh water lake by volume. It was raining in the past 4 days and rain means life the Andean world.

Just in a few weeks and months (October-April) the flora around Lake Titicaca flourishes again each year. Plants and flowers, herbs and bushes revitalize and soon will bloom giving us the typical and beautiful colors of the Pachamama.

Yellow and red cantutas and roses will bloom again attracting hummingbirds and insects.

Rain is symbol of life, rain gives origin to rivers and rivers go to the lake, taking its waters into the Andean sea named “The Sacred Lake of the Incas” once time upon.

Loving Puno`s day:
November 4th
“Puno la Capital folklórica de America” is turning one anniversary more. One of Peru`s top cities onto high-elevation at 12 560 ft. or 3830 masl. Seeing back in the time the bay of Puno nearby Lake Titicaca was inhabited 2 millenniums B.C., approximately. Thus our ancestors, Caluyo people, Uros, Puquinas, Pucaras, Collas, Lupacas, Incas, Spanish Colonial period and today`s Puno.

This celebration`s basically rooted in the Colonial times when viceroy Conde de Lemos moved the Spanish mining settlements from San Luis de Alba (which was located behind Cancharani hill) to the current Puno`s downtown around September 7-9 of 1668.

Puno, generous homeland of our Ancestors; cradle of Quechua and Aymara people in the bay of the sacred Lake Titicaca named also South America`s Folkloric Capital, for us the puneños is more than it, it`s land of hard-working men and women from Desaguadero in the border with Bolivia to Juliaca city in the northern area…Puno with its dances and precious treasures mystically watched by our Ancient mountains Apus, Cancharani and Azuguini.

There`re 220k inhabitants Puno city but Puno region has about 1 200 000 people, in accordance to the last census.
We speak Spanish, Aymara and Quechua.
Puno is the administrative center of its 13 provinces.
With some challenges and many opportunities in this new century.

Lake Titicaca

In the fresh mornings I used to see from my window the clearness of its waters surrounded by hills and another islands. Some fishing boats, Andean gulls, upper white beautiful clouds, simple awesome!

Oh wonder of Pachamama!
Built with the forces of nature above the Andes in the high plateau
through the millenniums.
Its dozens of islands with wunderbar vistas, its huble people how speak Quechua, Aymara and Spanish ( isla Suasi, isla Soto, Taquile, Amantani, isla del sol…).

In afternoons I liked to see the sunset (June- September) from the hill of “Itapilluni” (Suasi Island) with tourists up there. Surrounding us the sacred lake of the incas. The sky changing its colors, slowly tata Inti or the sun is disappearing on the western horizon behind the mountains.
The wind blows the mass of waters, as well as the blue sky`s now getting orange, light yellow, purple and so…during the last 15 minutes…”what a such sunset echo the tourists while continue taking pictures.
And the wind blows our faces…the night coming back with its black blanket.  It’s time to go back to our lodge.

Living in a tiny island on the highest navigable lake in the planet was amazing, close to sky, closer the Milky Way and constellations. Remembering the myths and legends of the Ancient Collas and Incas as Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo” legend arising from the its blue waters around the Sun Island today Bolivia.

       Located at
12 506 ft. (3 812m) above the sea level on the Altiplano between Peru and Bolivia (60%-    40%) is the highest navegable lake in the planet and the largest freshwater lake in South America. Lake Titicaca´s a mountain lake wonder shaped by Pachamama´s or Nature forces 60 million years ago aproximately.
Fromm y early years I fell in love with Lake Titicaca. It´s blue waters, beauty and immensity.

The average deep is 140 meters or 459 ft. (main lake). and its deepest point is located around Soto island with 282 m or 925 ft. making lake Titicaca one of the deepest lakes in the world.
And so it has a length of 170 Km or 106 miles and 60 Km or 37 miles of width in average. 8 500 Km2 (3282 ml2) with a total of 900 Km3 (216ml3) or 4% of world`s fresh water.
Temperature’s stable never go frozen. From 9 -15°C or 48- 59 Fahrenheit from December to May during days and 5°C less in nights.

Birds: Puna teals, American coots, Andean gulls, Titicaca`s silvery diver… around 175 birds.
Fish: Rain trout, Bonaerense king fish, carachi and Titicaca`s cat fish.
Another famous inhabitant of its waters is the Titicaca`s giant frog that today in endangered.
Chullo or totora (Titicaca`s reed aquatic plant) is used to build the woven floating island in the bay of Puno as well as in the areas of the lake.

With a veil of mystery and antiquity defying the time stand up over Umayo peninsula the Ancient Collas-Incas funerary towers named "Chullpas de Sillustani" which mean envelopes.
There`re many (around 70) but the biggest and most captivating is "La Chullpa del Lagarto" lizard`s Chullpa, 40 feet heigh.

Located in the northwestern zone of Puno city, 41 miles or 40 minutes by car was an important place for our ancestors, Collas and Incas.
One of the main archaeological sites in the Southern Peru with hundreds of visitors each day.

And the lake Umayo which surrounds the Chullpas de Sillustani is like-magic blue and beautiful lagoon. In the middle of the same there is an isle inhabited by vicuñas.
